STDs strike 1 million California youths

first_img“This disproportionately affects young people and has a lot of secondary effects,” Fielding said. “For some women, chlamydia leads to infertility.” Researchers found the number of cases in Ventura County totaled 10,270 and treatment cost $9.9 million. In San Bernardino County, the number of cases totaled 75,606 and treatment costs $50 million. From 2000 to 2005 in Los Angeles County, the number of reported cases of gonorrhea jumped from 7,199 to 10,494; syphilis more than tripled, from 336 to 1,213; and chlamydia cases increased from 30,546 to 38,862. “But HIV is really what we are most concerned about,” said Dr. Peter Kerndt, director of the county’s Sexually Transmitted Disease Program. “We know the rates of HIV in the younger age groups and among minorities are increasing. That’s where the epidemic is growing the fastest.” Kerndt noted several reasons for the increases, including better screening of youths covered under managed care insurance plans. Also, today’s youths generally are more sexually active, sometimes have multiple sexual partners and simultaneously place themselves at higher risk by using drugs and alcohol, Kerndt said. Health officials are also concerned about recent increases in different types of reported STDs among youths, including HIV, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea. Although HIV became a reportable disease last year, no statistics are currently available and HPV is not a reportable disease. But health officials are especially concerned about HPV, noting that more than 90 percent of people who have the disease have no symptoms. Although research suggests that most immune systems will eliminate HPV infection within a year or two, about 10 percent of people remain infected for much longer, possibly for life. A vaccine that now protects against four HPV types – which cause about 70 percent of cervical cancer cases and 90 percent of genital warts – is now approved for females ages 11-26. “If you have private insurance, you can be vaccinated by your private physician,” Kerndt said. “If they are eligible, they can receive vaccines in publicly funded clinics.” About half of hepatitis B cases are also sexually transmitted. Infected people often have no symptoms, but it can lead to fatal liver disease. A vaccine is also available for hepatitis B now. “If youth are having sex, they should make sure they have protection,” Fielding said. “Condoms, for most of these diseases but not all, are the first line of protection.” troy.anderson@dailynews.com (213) 974-8985160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. More than 1 million youths in California have sexually transmitted diseases that cost the state more than $1 billion a year in treatment, according to a study set to be released today. And nearly a third of all the cases – 361,876 – are in Los Angeles County at an annual cost of $390 million, according to the study by the Public Health Institute. The findings contrast sharply with previous data based on cases reported among young people ages 15 to 24 – with researchers saying their findings are nearly 10 times higher. Researchers used statistic estimation methods recently developed at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to estimate the number of new cases and associated medical costs for eight major STDs. “This epidemic is like an iceberg – what you see is just a small part of what you have,” said Petra Jerman, a research scientist at the Oakland-based Public Health Institute’s Center for Research and Adolescent Health. “The estimated number of new cases and their associated costs illustrate that the STD epidemic among California youths remains largely hidden.” The report comes as health officials have expressed growing concerns about serious complications STDs can cause. The human papillomavirus, or HPV, is linked to cervical and anal cancer. Other STDs can increase the chance of contracting HIV by two to six times. “If you look at the overall numbers, the biggest impacts are from two diseases,” said Dr. Jonathan E. Fielding, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. “One is HIV and the other is HPV.” Fielding said the data also highlight the “hidden epidemic” of chlamydia and gonorrhea. last_img read more

Man in consensual teen sex case freed

first_imgBy Daniel Yee THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FORSYTH, Ga. – A former high school football star given 10 years in prison for having consensual oral sex with another teenager was freed Friday by Georgia’s highest court, which ruled that his sentence amounted to cruel and unusual punishment. Genarlow Wilson spent two years behind bars in the case that led to widespread protests of racism and heavy handed justice. After he was imprisoned, Wilson became the subject of prominent editorials and national news broadcasts. His sentence was denounced even by members of the jury that convicted him and the author of the 1995 law that put him in prison. Wilson was convicted of aggravated child molestation after he was videotaped having oral sex with a 15-year-old girl at a 2003 New Year’s Eve party in a hotel room. He was 17 at the time.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! That change, the court said, represented “a seismic shift in the Legislature’s view of the gravity of oral sex between two willing teenage participants.” The justices also said Wilson’s sentence made “no measurable contribution to acceptable goals of punishment,” and his crime did not rise to the “level of adults who prey on children.” last_img read more

POLICE SEARCH FLAT IN SEARCH FOR MISSING SCHOOLGIRL ARLENE

first_imgA new breakthrough has been made in the search for missing schoolgirl Arlene Arkinson.Forensic experts are carrying out a detailed examination of a derelict flat once occupied by a man cleared of murdering the missing schoolgirl who was last seen in Bundoran.Officers in white boiler suits moved into the property in the centre of Castlederg, Co Tyrone, where child killer Robert Howard lived at the time of Arlene’s disappearance 18 years ago. Police said they were not looking for human remains. The flat in Main Street has been searched before, but a forensic team was called in after serious crime branch detectives got new information, according to the Police Service of Northern Ireland.Body recovery dogs were also brought in to help a search team check land between Castlederg and the village of Clady on the Tyrone-Donegal border.Arlene (15), vanished on her way home from a disco in Bundoran, Co Donegal, in August 1994. She had been seen with Howard who was acquitted of her murder in 2005 when he was aged 61.He is currently serving a life sentence for the rape and murder of schoolgirl Hanna Williams (14), from Deptford, south London, whose body was found in a cement works in Northfleet, Kent, in March 2002.The flat where Howard lived when Arlene disappeared has been derelict for some time and officers had to make sure it was safe to enter before today’s detailed forensic examination got under way.A spokesman for the PSNI serious crime branch said: “This investigation remains active and ongoing. But it is also extremely complex and requires detectives to adopt a thorough and co-ordinated approach to progressing investigative opportunities.“Some new information has been received. Detectives have made inquiries over the last few months to examine this information and this had led to an expansion of the existing search plan. “The fact that new information has come into the inquiry as a result of previous appeals is heartening. Police still believe that there may be more information in the community and we would appeal for anyone with any information to come forward – for Arlene and for her family.”The spokesman said the Arkinson family had been kept up to date about the progress of the investigation. “We sympathise with Arlene’s family in their continued distress, frustration and anger. We maintain an absolute commitment to working to resolve their unbearable situation despite the complexities and timespan of the investigation.”POLICE SEARCH FLAT IN SEARCH FOR MISSING SCHOOLGIRL ARLENE was last modified: September 17th, 2012 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:Arlene ArkinsonbundoranPSNIlast_img read more

first_imgThere promises to be many tall stories (and late tackles!) when Lagan Harps F.C. host their 40th Aniversary Dinner Dance in the Mt Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny. The club have undertaken this event to co-incide with the Donegal League 40th Aniversary season. After numerous discussions with older stalwards of the club and the community it was agreed to have this night in the Mount Errigal to bring all the community and the as many Lagan players past and present altogether under the one roof for one night. At the recent launch it was also great to see a whole host of former players present players and representatives from the ladies team and the underage there. And again the club are appealing for the local community to come out as nearly every house in the Lagan area have at one time had a player or players who represented the club. The idea on the night is to remember the past the people who worked hard to launch the club, the middle the people who sustained the club and the exciting future the club has with the addition of the very successful Ladies team and the whole host of underage the club have introduced in the past years. Having been talking to people like Aidan O Donnell snr, Dessie Gibson, Jack Crawford and John O Donnell you soon get to realise the number of players the club have put through the books over the past forty years. The club are appealing to the whole wider Lagan/Manor community for the support on the night. Lagan without the help of the locl community on a dialy basis and without the help of our sponsors down the years would never have survived.Over the past few weeks the number of old photos that have surfaced and old paper clipings has really got the community going.Even some of the club’s most senior members say it is surprising to see names appearing of people who played with the club at a very early time and never realised that they ever played football. The success of the club has risen dramatically in the recent years past with lots of success at underage and especially with the ladies team winning an all Ireland title. The senior men have also tasted recent success under Jason Gibsons management.Brid Mc Ginty has to take huge credit in the introduction of the ladies team and the work Brid has contributed is imense. Ernie Pollock, John Crawford, Seamus Crossan and all the other successful coaches and managent who put in the work free of charge to maintain the Lagan underage structure. The night itself will kickoff with a dinner reception at 8pm in the Mount Erragail and the music on the night will be provided by David Craig & The Regulators.Tickets are €25 and are available from any club member or by calling the following mobile numbers:0863696198 – Damien0872268916 – Ernie To conclude the club will greatly like to see as many past and present members players and anyone that wishes to attend what will be a lively and entertaining night. The club says it cant promise all the stories on the night will be true but the one thing we will promise is a god old fashioned Lagan night out!LET’S RAISE A GLASS TO LAGAN HARPS – 40 NOT OUT! was last modified: October 19th, 2012 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:40th anniversaryLagan Harps FClast_img read more
