How to Create a Preference for You and Your Offering

first_imgSales is a zero sum game. Someone wins, and someone loses. The person who wins does so because they create a preference. They create a bias, and that bias block competitors and competitive offerings. The way that you create a preference for you and your solution is by creating greater value. You want to drive a wedge between your customer and your competitors and create a strong bias for you and what you sell.Greater trust creates a preference. Your dream clients are worried about execution, and they worry about risk. Trust is the timeless and deep fundamental that alleviates the concerns that you will fail your client. It mitigates the concern that you might be self-oriented and that you are making decisions to create the greatest benefit for you.You also create a preference through developing a deeper understanding of your dream clients challenges. Understanding your client’s challenges proves that you cared enough to learn about them and their business. It also demonstrates that you have business acumen and situational knowledge, the keys to developing the right solutions and ensuring they fit.You create a bias by having ideas about what your client’s future will look like—or how it might look if they make the right decisions. This future-orientation positions you as something more than someone who sells a product or service. It establishes you as a trusted advisor, someone with the ability to help guide your client’s business into the future.Along these same lines, you create a preference when you take responsibility for a greater outcome. When you handle outcomes instead of products and services, you create a preference by taking on a higher level of accountability. Coupled with your deep understanding, this makes you a more strategic partner by allowing you to become an integrated part of how your client does business. You bring ideas.Economic value creates a preference. One of the most significant changes in sales over the last few decades has been the whittling away of sales relationships that were built only on a personal liking and friendship. Those things are still important, but they need to be coupled with economic value. Your solution needs to create results, and one of the measurements is going to be financial. You create a preference when your value creates a greater economic impact (and you can do this even when you have a higher price). What are you doing to create a preference and bias for working with you over all the other salespeople your dream client could choose to buy from? What are you doing to create a bias for your ideas about what the future is going to look and the decisions your clients should be taking now?How does what you are selling and how you are selling it create a greater level of strategic commitment and integrate you into your client’s organization? How do you become a category of one? Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close. Australia not happy with LLRC report

Australia is not fully satisfied with the report of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC)  as it fails to fully address alleged violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.The Australian Foreign Ministry said today (Monday) that the Australian government has studied closely Sri Lanka’s Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) Report, and welcomes its recommendations for addressing the post-conflict situation. The LLRC report contains 285 principal observations and recommendations divided into six sections: ceasefire agreement; international humanitarian law issues; human rights; land issues; restitution and compensation; and reconciliation. Australia provides practical support for Sri Lanka’s efforts towards reconciliation and reconstruction in conflict-affected areas. President Mahinda Rajapaksa formed the LLRC in May 2010 to investigate events during the conflict between February 2002 and May 2009 and to make recommendations to advance restitution and reconciliation. The LLRC included five Sinhalese, two Tamil and one Muslim representatives. Since 2009, Australia has supported the clearance of land mines and unexploded ordnance from 74 square kilometres of land and the reconstruction of around 4,600 homes and an estimated 20 schools in northern Sri Lanka. “The Australian Government has consistently urged Sri Lanka to investigate all allegations of crimes committed by both sides to the conflict, including those raised in the UN Secretary-General’s Panel of Experts report.“In light of the report’s failure to comprehensively address such allegations, we continue to call on Sri Lanka for all such allegations to be investigated in a transparent and independent manner.“It is now also critical that the Sri Lankan Government endorse the LLRC report’s constructive elements and set clear, firm timeframes for their implementation,” Rudd said in a statement. Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd said the LLRC report contains constructive proposals for advancing reconciliation and reconstruction, including through reducing the presence of security forces in the North, care of internally displaced persons and media freedoms.“Nonetheless, while the LLRC’s conclusion that further investigations need to be undertaken in specific cases is certainly welcome, wider issues relating to accountability need to be dealt with more thoroughly. read more

The Texas Rangers Are Making Unsustainable History In OneRun Games

The chart above contains two extreme outliers: the 2016 Texas Rangers and the 2012 Baltimore Orioles, the only two teams in recent history with a better than .750 winning percentage in one-run games. In isolation, both performances were extremely unlikely to happen by chance (less than 1-in-10,000 odds), though given the huge sample of seasons we have so far — 2,452 team-seasons in MLB’s history — you’d expect such a thing to happen eventually.One-run performance is messy, but it isn’t all luck. The correlation between a team’s bullpen strength and its one-run winning percentage is significant but fairly weak, highlighting the role of randomness in these situations.3The r value is .28. Just as any given plate appearance can produce almost any imaginable outcome, a game that hinges on only a single run is mostly up to chance. That said, a good bullpen elevates the probability of holding a one-run lead. Add up that edge over the course of a season, and each win above replacement from the bullpen is worth about one extra point to a team’s winning percentage in one-run games. A five-win bullpen upgrade, which could take a team from roughly the bottom 10 percent of MLB bullpens to the top 10 percent, would net an extra five points of winning percentage. Over an average number of one-run games (46 per season), that’s equivalent to 2.3 more wins. If you total up that improved bullpen’s contribution in one-run games and their estimated contribution over the rest of the season (3.6 wins4If there are 46 one-run games per season, that leaves 116 other games, or 71.6 percent of the season. 71.6 percent of their five wins is 3.6 wins.), that five additional bullpen WAR ends up buying you about 5.9 wins in on-field results.55 WAR of bullpen talent can buy 5.9 wins for a team because of the high-leverage situations in which relievers are deployed, where talent is able to be converted to wins at a greater rate. This fact may help to explain why relievers seem to be overvalued by front offices relative to the sabermetric consensus. But all of this assumes a top-notch bullpen anyway. And, surprisingly, the Rangers’ bullpen hasn’t been exceptional — or even good — this year. Although the 2012 Orioles’ relievers produced more than six wins of value, the Rangers’ pen has a paltry 1.1 WAR between them. Based on that alone, we’d expect their record in one-run games to fall below .500.Anchored by closer Sam Dyson and Matt Bush, the top of the Rangers’ bullpen has been fine. But that duo has been dragged down by poor outings from other relievers such as Tom Wilhelmsen and Cesar Ramos.Of course, Wilhelmsen and Ramos are typically used in low-leverage situations, only appearing in one-run games as a last resort. So I also looked to see whether I could explain one-run performance better by focusing on the top relievers in a given bullpen. But counting only the top three or top five relievers didn’t improve the model after controlling for the total WAR of the bullpen. Neither did looking at exceptionally unbalanced bullpens, i.e. those whose top relievers produced much more WAR than their teammates. That doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility that WAR fails to account for something special that the Rangers’ bullpen might be doing to win one-run games, but league-wide data doesn’t provide much support for that notion. If the Rangers can’t attribute their one-run success to the greatness of their bullpen, to what do they owe it? The answer is timing. The Rangers have played much better when the game is on the line, as measured by FanGraphs’ Clutch score. Their bullpen ranks eighth in the league in Clutch score, but even more impressively, their offense ranks first.6Their starting pitchers are more average, ranking 13th in baseball. Combine these two performances and you have a team that saves and scores runs better than any other when it counts. But unfortunately for the Rangers, performance in the clutch is not a stable indicator of success. We need look no further than the 2016 Phillies for proof: Philly dominated the league in one-run games for the first two months of the year, rolling out to a 14-3 record in those contests through May 20th, which would have shattered the all-time mark if it had continued. It didn’t. By the end of the first half, the Phillies’ one-run record was down to 20-9 (which still would have been put them in the top 25 all-time); now they’re at a pedestrian 25-17 for the year, which drops them below the 200th position on the all-time list. The lesson here is that a team’s record in one-run games tends to regress to the mean. The Rangers are more than 90 percent likely to make the playoffs, but they won’t be able to count on this kind of luck in tight contests when they get there. The 2016 Texas Rangers are making history. Their 30-8 record in one-run games gives them a .789 winning percentage that, if it holds up, would set a record for the best winning percentage in one-run games since 1901. But the Rangers have a not-so-slight problem that could haunt them in the playoffs: performance in one-run games is almost entirely — though not exclusively — a matter of good timing and luck, not skill.By all accounts, the Rangers are a decent team. Their run differential is +9, and sophisticated projection models such as FanGraphs’ (which looks at talent alone, not their record so far) would call for them to win 84 games over the course of a full season. Their excellent record in one-run games has helped put them over the top, though. They’ll probably finish with more than 90 wins and the AL West crown, despite the rival Houston Astros posting a much better run differential.Performance in one-run games is notoriously variable. But one argument for the Rangers’ ability to sustain their record-setting mark might be a lights-out bullpen. Closer Sam Dyson has 30 saves, so perhaps the Rangers’ relief corps has earned more of those one-run wins than most teams with a similar record would deserve. To test this theory, I looked at the relationship between a team’s bullpen performance and its record in one-run games, going back to 1988.1That year was chosen because it is the beginning of the current era of baseball. I used data gathered through Aug. 27, after which the Rangers won two more one-run games. I summed up FanGraphs’ wins above replacement for each team’s bullpen, and then plotted it against the team’s winning percentage in one-run contests.2I also tried the same analysis with Baseball Prospectus’ version of wins above replacement and got similar results. read more

Being Greek Fest celebrated

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram After the first Being Greek Festival ran out of food last year, this year’s festival committee felt the need to put out a disclaimer: “No matter what system is in place, when several thousand people want to be fed at once an unfortunate and unavoidable fact is that people will have to wait for food,” the Being Greek Festival Facebook page read. “Therefore, if you have young children we recommend you exercise common sense and bring something to feed them.” Feeding a 50,000 strong Greek community in the St George area of NSW isn’t an easy task, but the organising committee made sure food was in abundance this year, with a variety of Greek themed treats and the smell of grilling meats in the air. Greeks all around NSW, and many of those who wanted to be ‘Greek for a day’, came to celebrate OXI Day on Sunday in Crass Park, Kogarah. Home and Away star Ada Nicodemou had the crowd a bit star struck, as did Mary Coustas, who brought out Effie for some fans. Greek Australian DJ Krazy Kon had the crowd bopping their heads when he officially launched his new Greece Summer 2013 album. The modern interlude was well appreciated after a heavily traditional program full of Greek dances and music.last_img read more

Father Emmanuel Lemelson refutes claims made by Wall Street Journal

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram An article accompanied by a video published in The Wall Street Journal (‘Hedge-Fund Priest: Thou Shalt Make Money’ dated 28 October 2015) has been met with a flurry of criticism by the man who it was written about. Reverend Father Emmanuel Lemelson, 39, contacted Neos Kosmos to voice his disappointment with the article and point Neos Kosmos to two open letters he had written to The Wall Street Journal in response to its claims. He pointed out 14 “significant errors” with the article, containing what he claimed were falsities centring on his life as a priest, his personal circumstances and The Amvona Fund run by him. “Rob Copeland’s recent Wall Street Journal contains dozens of factual errors, misstatements and major errors of omission amongst a litany of insinuation and innuendo,” he said. “This is an extraordinarily error-laden article that projects an utterly inaccurate view of The Amvona Fund, LP and its manager.” He rebuts claims that he labelled Benjamin Graham’s (‘the father of investing’) book The Intelligent Investor ‘the Good Book’, that he boasted about ‘crashing stocks’ and that his hedge fund ‘operates with almost no official scrutiny’. Of the religious insinuations Father Lemelson refers to, he further refutes claims that he lives a double life (through his role with the Greek Orthodox Church and as a hedge fund manager), that he was a ‘disciple’ of investor and tycoon Warren Buffett (a play on religious terminology) and that he instructed investors to ‘pray for the fund and disregard short-term performance’ as a rule of thumb – he also disproved the use of the term ‘Turkish Archbishop’, one he says is non-existent. Of all his grievances, the most alarming were Father Lemelson’s claims that some of the recorded quotes included in the original text were fabricated, others were misrepresented and omitted, and interviews with supposed colleagues were with individuals he had never even met. Writing to the editor of The Wall Street Journal – Daniel Fitzpatrick – Father Lemelson stresses the falsity of the article in its entirety. “Rob Copeland’s recent Wall Street Journal article reads like a directory of fallacies. Inductive reasoning is used throughout to shift between affirming the consequent, begging the question, poisoning the well and equivocation to set up both false causes and false dilemmas in his story,” he wrote. “What was published was a thinly-veiled ad hominem (personal) attack based apparently on Mr Copeland’s personal feelings, the insinuation and innuendo of which are wholly unsupported by evidence.” He finishes his letter by questioning the reporting standards and ethical principles adhered to by the publication.last_img read more

Le 23 janvier 2012 à 19:30 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more

Fire Marshal Educates Houston Stakeholders on Active Shooter Response Standard

first_img Listen To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: X – / 2center_img The National Fire Protection Association has developed an active shooter response standard called NFPA 3000.It’s aimed at first responders, as well as community leaders and business owners.Harris County Fire Marshal Laurie Christensen, who took part in its creation, and NFPA Southwest Regional Director Bob Sullivan hosted an information session at Houston’s Crime Stoppers building Monday.“The whole point of the standard is to provide a framework and guidance to all the different responding groups, the different responding agencies, and give them a common game plan to go by,” Sullivan said.Christensen said what makes this emergency response standard different from others is that it includes more stakeholders.“One of the things we want to realize is, especially during the Las Vegas shooting, had it not been for the citizens and the civilian responders, we truly believe we would have lost more casualties,” Christensen said. The program is meant to cover not just shootings, but any type of event involving an active assailant, from the planning to the responding and recovery phase. It leaves it up to communities to incorporate parts that make the most sense for them. For a fee, people can sign up for an online training. Why is the Fire Marshal’s Office taking the lead on this? Christensen said her office is the link between law enforcement and disaster response.“Unfortunately, this is a new preparedness that we’re having to get ready for,” she said. “And our goal with the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office was, let’s be that conduit that bridges that gap between all the responders and the community.” 00:00 /00:50 Sharelast_img read more

Bridge collapses in Kakdwip

first_imgKolkata: Following Posta and Siliguri, another under-construction bridge collapsed at Kakdwip in South 24-Parganas on Monday morning. However, no one was injured. A detailed investigation has already been ordered by Sundarban development minister Manturam Pakhira. According to locals, the bridge was sanctioned and work started approximately two years ago. It was being constructed to connect West Steamer Ghat and West Gangadharpur. On Monday at around 10 am, locals heard a loud noise. When they moved towards the source of the sound, they found that a large portion of the bridge had collapsed. Administrative wings of the Sub-Division and the District Magistrate were immediately informed. Police also reached the spot to secure the area. Later, government officials arrived and inspected the situation thoroughly. “Some children were playing nearby. But all of them are safe,” said a local resident. Some of the locals claimed that during the construction of the bridge, a crack was found. But following an inspection by the engineers, a green signal was given to continue with the construction work. According to the government officials, there might have been some fault in the girders. Sources informed that the agency which was given the contract, has been showcaused by the Sundarban development department. The Sundarban development minister also raised finger toward the construction agency. A high power committee has also been formed following the incident. Four contractors have been ordered to appear before government officials on Tuesday by Pakhira.last_img read more

The Future of Mobile Payments Awaits Your Fingerprint

first_img 4 min read Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global July 6, 2015 You may have swiped your phone recently to make an in-store payment. Yet that act was hardly more convenient than swiping a credit card, right? Related: The 15 Most Popular Online Payment SolutionsThat’s probably why you’re seeing only 3 percent to 7 percent of consumers using their phones for in-store purchases. But that’s about to change.By 2017, mobile payments are expected to reach $90 billion in the United States alone, a significant bump from 2012’s $12.8 billion total. Of that $90 billion, $41 billion will come from mobile proximity payments — or, to put it bluntly, the act of waving your mobile device — where you once swiped a credit card.Predictions aside, consumers are still apprehensive about using mobile payments. They’re convinced that losing their phones would mean simultaneously losing wallets. Plus, there’s all that sordid business about security. In reality, though, mobile payments such as Apple Pay can be more secure than swiping a credit card. Even if a consumer loses his phone, someone else will find it nearly impossible to access its mobile payment system without the correct fingerprint. This is where the innovation of Apple Pay truly lies. And considering how hackers stole millions of credit card numbers from Target and The Home Depot, mobile payments just might be the answer to more secure in-store transactions through tokenization (a term in data security that describes the substitution of a sensitive data element with a nonsensitive equivalent). Related: 25 Payment Tools for Small Businesses, Freelancers and StartupsSpecifically: When you make an in-store purchase with Apple Pay, the retailer you’re buying from isn’t actually getting your credit card number. As more and more people come to understand the technology, then, the use of mobile payments will inevitably grow, and retailers would be wise to hop on board. To leverage mobile payments for your business, keep these four things in mind:1. Implement mobile payments immediately.Mobile payments are here to stay. By adopting early, you’ll not only provide more convenience for shoppers, but also outpace the competition. Staying ahead of the curve with new technology can also lead to revenue growth and better market positioning. Take Dash, a startup from our accelerator program. Its app allows users to split and pay a bill directly from their smartphones. This was initially done by allowing users to store credit card information within the app, but now the app also supports Apple Pay. By adopting this technology early on, the company was able to carve out a nice niche in the marketplace.2. Rethink checkout flows. When you enhance checkout flows, simplify the process and optimize for mobile payments, you remove obstacles that may be impeding conversions. This can result in more users, larger shopping carts, more impulse buys and less cart abandonment. Integrating mobile payments makes the process even faster, easier and more secure, ensuring that only the user (and his or her fingerprint) can close out that tab and make that purchase. It may also help attract new customers to your business, largely due to the simplicity and intuitiveness of mobile payments — something mobile users have come to expect.3. Build around mobile payments. If you haven’t yet entered the marketplace, take a closer look at your product or service to determine whether you should build around the mobile payment technology right off the bat. Making it native to your platform is much easier than retrofitting it later on.A number of startups have hit the scene already equipped with this payment option. They include Spring, a shopping app, and Caviar, a food delivery app currently serving 15 cities in the United States. Eventually, this could become the norm.4. Create loyalty programs. If you’re looking to encourage mobile payments, consider rewarding users for utilizing the system through discounts or deals. Promotions often have a way of incentivizing users and could cultivate larger purchases from your customer base in the long run.Like all technology, innovation is inevitable. By adopting this new feature now, you can blaze the trail of the mobile revolution, keep pace with consumer trends and enjoy the wealth that lies ahead.Related: Google Lifts the Veil on Android Pay, Its Apple Pay Competitor Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. If cast in bronze, it could cost up to $80,000.Plans for same-sex inter-species relationship to become a statue Kāpiti mayor K Gurunathan spoke at Thomas’ funeral last year.He said getting the money for the statue is not a sure thing.‘That would involve responsibility for the artistic nature of the work and its placement going to the council’s Art Pane,’ he said, according to The Dominion Post.‘If they are happy with that, that’s fine. Otherwise they can look to crowdfunding the project. I think Thomas has the pull to raise that kind of money.“No matter the process, Thomas is a great and quirky Kāpiti story and we should be celebrating our stories through our art.’Thomas (white) with Henry, Henrietta (black) and their cygnets | Photo: Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust Facebookcenter_img A goose and a swan | Photo: Pexels Share this:TwitterFacebookLike this:Like Loading… eTN Chatroom for Readers (join us)last_img read more
