CALGARY – Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says if British Columbia wants to keep a lid on gasoline prices it should stop opposing the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion. The Trans Mountain pipeline expansion would triple the amount of crude flowing from Alberta to a port facility in Burnaby, B.C.B.C. Premier John Horgan said Thursday he would like to see the federal government take a leadership role in keeping gas prices affordable. He said the pipeline expansion would not bring down gas prices and will only send bitumen to another jurisdiction. In Calgary today, Notley accused Horgan’s government of environmental hypocrisy. She says the pipeline expansion would benefit Alberta and British Columbia.

“We must address the stigma faced by people living with HIV,” UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot told the first workshop of government, business and civil society convened in China to discuss the potential role of partnerships in fighting the spread of HIV in the country yesterday.”If we do not, all other efforts will be severely undermined. Business can play a big role in breaking the silence and reducing stigma.”Workshop sponsors were UNAIDS, Harvard University and the World Economic Forum business grouping. It was part of a series called “HIV/AIDS and Business in Africa and Asia: Building Sustainable Partnerships.””For the first time, we have a chance to stop the epidemic worldwide,” Dr. Piot said, noting that defeating HIV/AIDS was a top priority for UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. “When we first started, it was hard to talk to governments about this, but not now.”Unlike SARS, AIDS had lingering effects which created greater social problems, like caring for the children left behind when infected parents die, he said.”It’s not just a problem of the poor, the drug users, or prostitutes,” Dr. Piot said. “Some of the most entrepreneurial people in the country are entrepreneurial when it comes to sexual matters too.””It is act now, or pay later,” he added. “But if one country can handle this, I believe it is China.”

Just one in five women attending breast cancer clinics are aware alcohol increases the risk of disease – and half of staff have no idea.Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with 54,000 diagnoses and 11,000 deaths annually.Scientists estimate that alcohol consumption causes around one in ten cases of the disease. But a study by the University of Southampton found that women at breast screening clinics, and at appointments for those with symptoms of disease, were largely unaware of the links. And just half of staff working in such settings knew about the connection, the study found. The study, published in BMJ Online, involved 102 women undergoing mammograms, 103 at clinics because of symptoms and 33 clinical staff. Just 16 per cent of those in the screening group and 23 per cent in clinic group knew alcohol is a risk factor. And only 52 per cent of staff knew alcohol was a risk.Researchers said advising women about the risks when they attended sessions could be a “teachable moment” when they were more likely to listen to health messages about the dangers of alcohol.Thirty per cent of women said they would be more likely to attend screening if it included information on how to cut their risks of cancer. But most staff felt it would make no difference to attendance, with four in five listing disadvantages to such an approach, with fears that patients would feel “blamed” for developing the disease.Study author Professor Julia Sinclair, of Southampton University, said: “Over 20 per cent of women aged 45 to 64 reportedly drink more than 14 units per week, so any intervention to reduce population level consumption could have a significant influence on breast cancer rates, as well as help to manage the side effects of treatment and improve the overall health of survivors.”
Crusader Resources reports the following update on BFS metallurgical test work at its Borborema gold project. As part of the BFS the company is undertaking an ongoing technical and financial optimisation of the 2.0 Mt/y project. This optimisation work includes detailed metallurgical test work utilising samples originating from eight large diameter (PQ) diamond drill holes which have provided approximately 6 t of sample from 1,200 m of core. The holes are deemed representative of the larger orebody, both along strike and down dip, and reflect the various lithologies present at Borborema. Finalisation of the metallurgical test work and subsequent processing plant flowsheet design is a critical path item for the completion of the BFS for Borborema. HighlightsOrway Mineral Consultants (OMC) is evaluating comminution flowsheet options. Evaluations suggest the Borborema ore is amenable to single stage SAG milling which will reduce upfront capital expenditure compared to the previous three stage crush / ball mill optionRecommissioned test work on the Borborema resource has confirmed the validity of a simple crush‐grindcyanidation processing circuit to provide high gold extractions in excess of 90%As expected heap leach and flotation options have been further evaluated and have been shown not to be optimalRecent test work has identified 80% material tests passing 106μm as the optimum grind size when operating costs and revenue benefits are analysedMineralogical evaluations are continuing to assess the gold deportment and mineralogical associations. Notably the role of mica present in the ore and gold liberation characterisation as a function of mica content and grinding energy input. An opportunity has been identified in minimising the use of grinding media via optimisation of the grinding circuit. Work is ongoing, with OMC embarking on assessment of operating cost criteria for the comminution circuit options. Options under evaluation are:Single stage SAG (lowest capex option) recently shown suited to achieving the nominal 106 μm grindA SAG/ball mill flowsheet (SAB)A multiple stage crush/ball mill flowsheet, as previously proposed in the PFSA hybrid coarse fed ball mill/SAG which includes primary crushing, and open circuit secondary crushing feeding a high ball charge SAG mill.Work completed indicates the optimal grind size of 80% material passing 106 μm and a leach residence time of 24 hours. The 106 μm grind size provides a positive impact on the project’s NPV over both finer and coarser grinds and residence time considerations. Final grind size selection is expected to be confirmed post the completion of the OMC operating cost criteria determinations.Ongoing metallurgical testing is focusing on variability testing where some 40 composites along strike and down dip will be subjected to a matrix of gravity‐leaching test work encompassing variables of grind size, cyanidation conditions and Borborema BFS metallurgical testing residence time. Short range variability testing will also be undertaken to populate a geo‐metallurgical model to forecast process recovery. Bulk test work will generate the key design parameters needed to take the BFS forward by providing the basis for capital and operating cost estimation as well as revenue estimates. This data will also ultimately support detailed design of the facility as the project is taken forward to production.Marcus Engelbrecht, CEO of Crusader said: “The metallurgical test work on the Borborema BFS is progressing well and is delivering some key positives with regard to optimising work‐streams. In particular the results from the OMC review regarding the SAG mill option, as well as the conclusions reached on grind size will have a real and positive impact on capital and operating costs and project economics.”Borborema is in the Seridó area of the Borborema province in northeast Brazil. It is 100% owned by Crusader and consists of three mining leases covering a total area of 29 km² including freehold title over the main prospect area. Previously mined as a heap leach in the 1980s, Crusader has completed more than 95,000 m of drilling on an orebody which is tabular and mineable as an open pit. Free milling ore with expected gold recoveries of 93%, the project is favoured by its location which has a dry climate and excellent infrastructure (roads, power, water and nearby sophisticated population centres). The Company benefits from a favourable taxation regime, significant existing infrastructure and on‐site facilities and the critically important Environmental Licence (LP) which Crusader received in 2017.
Authorities have declared a state of emergency, as forest fires rage out of control east and west of Athens, resulting in at least 50 deaths and over 100 people injured. One of the youngest victims is believed to be a six-month-old baby who died due to smoke inhalation.Twenty-nine kilometres east of Athens, in the seaside village of Mati, which is at the centre of the disaster, the Red Cross in Greece reported that 26 bodies were found in a villa’s yard.“Mati doesn’t even exist as a settlement anymore,” a woman told Skai TV.The fires are the worst Greece has experienced in over a decade, seeing dozens of homes destructed. With a cloud of black and orange smoke having descended across the city, transport services have been disrupted, the main Athens to Corinth motorway shut and train services cancelled.Greece has since sought international assistance from the EU to assist with containing the fires. It is believed the blaze started in a ravine located in the mountains overlooking Kineta, a resort town some 54 kilometres west of Athens. At least 150 firefighters were called to the scene as five water-dropping planes and seven helicopters assisted from the air.By late afternoon on Monday, the second major fire started in the Penteli area northeast of Athens. At least three aircraft, a helicopter, and 50 firefighters set out to battle the blaze.A motorcyclist looks at smoldering shrubbery on a road near Kineta, west of Athens on Monday. Photo: AAP via AP Photo/Thanassis StavrakisAuthorities have urged residents located within the vicinity of the fires to abandon their homes.“People should leave, close up their homes and just leave. People cannot tolerate so much smoke for so many hours,” said senior fire chief, Achilleas Tzouvaras.“This is an extreme situation.”Mayor of the Rafina-Pikermi area, Evangelos Bournous claimed he saw at least 100 homes and 200 cars in flames.“I saw it with my eyes, it is a real total catastrophe,” he said.Smoke rise over an avenue during a forest fire in Neo Voutsa, a northeast suburb of Athens, Greece on Monday.

(Phys.org)—NHK is drawing interest at this week’s CEATEC in Japan with its prototype 3-D binoculars. They take advantage of something called “8K” resolution so that the user can now zoom into an image without sacrificing image quality. 8K resolution means that you can zoom up to sixteen times and not have to make do with lower image quality. Ultra-high definition television now includes both 4K (2160p) and 8K (4320p) digital video formats. Broadcasts in 8K will offer a resolution sixteen times as sharp as current HD TVs with 2MP resolutions. NHK showed off the technology in London recently during the Olympics. The CEATEC binocular display, beyond TVs, allows NHK to demonstrate the benefits of 8K.which NHK also calls Super Hi-Vision. The binoculars showed 3-D diorama images of locales in Japan that were filmed with Super Hi-Vision cameras in 4K or 8K. The goggles have a lever for manipulation and by panning the viewer zooms in and out of the image. Suggested application could be as viewing tools for sightseeing spots and museums. You might have never heard of Audrey Munson, but if you have spent any time in New York, you have probably seen her face. Her likeness can be seen right across the city, from the gilded figure by Adolph Weinman that stands on top of the Manhattan Municipal Building, to the carved stone facade of the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue. Born in 1891, in Rochester, Audrey Munson is regarded as “America’s first supermodel.” She was stunningly beautiful and spent her youth posing for sculptors. While her beauty was eternalized in the hands of New York artists such as Isidore Konti, Daniel Chester French, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, and many others…by the time she was 30, Munson was jobless. The interest in her faded away, and after she tried to take her own life in 1921, “Miss Manhattan” spent 65 years in a psychiatric institution.Audrey Munson in 1922.Her longevity was a punishment for Munson who lived up to the age of 104, only to remember, in loneliness, how America desired her once upon a time. When she was five years old, Munson got her fortune told by the Gypsy Queen Elza. She told her:“You shall be beloved and famous. But when you think that happiness is yours, its Dead Sea fruit shall turn to ashes in your mouth. “You, who shall throw away thousands of dollars as a caprice, shall want for a penny. You, who shall mock at love, shall seek love without finding. “Seven men shall love you. Seven times you shall be led by the man who loves you to the steps of the altar, but never shall you wed.”Audrey always believed the telling was a curse.Audrey Munson in “Purity,” Liberty Theatre / Apeda, N.Y.Her parents divorced when she was eight, and little Audrey remained living with her mother. Having aspirations to become an actress and chorus girl, at the age of 17, Munson moved to New York City with her mother. However, her limber figure and long bones, her symmetrical face with chiseled cheekbones, high brows, an almond jaw, perfectly straight neoclassical nose, and gray-blue eyes were first spotted by the photographer Felix Benedict Herzog, while she was window shopping. Herzog immediately invited her to pose for him in his studio in the Lincoln Arcade Building.Actress and model Audrey Munson on the cover of the July 1, 1922 Movie Weekly, from a still from the American film Heedless Moths (1921).That was her gateway to fame, to becoming America’s first supermodel. Herzog introduced her to the people in the art world and very soon, artists started requiring her as a model for their work. It was the sculptor Isidore Konti who first asked her to pose naked. He claimed that for them, the artists, it doesn’t make such a great difference if the model has on nothing or is all dressed up, because they see only the work they do. Those words convinced her mother, and Audrey posed in her birthday suit. After that, every famous artist wanted her to pose for them. From Miss Manhattan to Panama-Pacific girl. In 1915, Munson posed as the model for more than a half of the sculptures displayed at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, the World Fair held in San Francisco, which earned her the name Panama-Pacific Girl.Heedless Moths is a 1921 American silent melodrama film written and directed by Robert Z. Leonard. That same year Audrey received her first role in the silent movie Inspiration, about a sculptor who is in search of the perfect model to inspire him. Unfortunately, it is believed that all copies of the movie are lost. How much Audrey was desired on the film screen is indicated by the fact that actual actresses were chosen as her doubles to do the acting part while she only appeared in the scenes without clothes. In the following year, 1916, Munson performed in another movie, Purity, which is the only surviving movie of all four she appeared in. It was rediscovered in 1993, in an obscure French collection, and later obtained by the French national cinema archive.Promotional brochure for “Inspiration,” 1915.This gave her hope for her acting aspirations, so between 1915 and 1917, Miss Manhattan moved to Santa Barbara, hoping to pursue a movie career. However, without any success, Munson returned to her sculptors in New York.Of course, there were seven men who fell in love with her, and maybe more, but she never fell in love with any of them. Instead, she got involved in their love fantasies and unwillingly became part of crimes she probably didn’t anticipate nor want.In 1917, Hermann Oelrichs Jr., an heir to the Comstock Lode, and the richest bachelor in America at the time, proposed to Munson, and her mother was very supportive of the idea. What happened next is lost to history, but it is known that in 1919, Munson sent a letter to the U.S. State Department, accusing Oelrichs of being a member of a pro-German network which conspired to sabotage her film career. She also wrote about her plans for leaving for England and restarting her acting career there.Memorial Fountain for Spencer Trask in Saratoga Springs. Photo by N-Lange.de CC BY SA 4.0After that, Audrey and her mother lived in a boarding house owned by Dr. Walter Wilkins who eventually fell in love with Audrey. In February 1920, his wife, Julia Wilkins, was found lifeless and it turned out that Dr. Walter had done her in so that he would be able to marry Munson. Whether she had an affair with the doctor or was in any way involved with him is unknown. When questioned by the police, Audrey denied any romantic relationship with Wilkins, who was sent to the electric chair. In 1921, Munson appeared in a move Headless Moths, based on her life story. She received a $27,000 check which she claimed to be invalid and for which she filled a suit against the agent-producer, Allan Rock.Illustration of a review in The Moving Picture World.Things went downhill for Audrey. No more marriage proposals, no more job proposals, no income, living off the earnings by her mother who sold utensils door to door. In 1922, at the age of 31, she swallowed a solution of mercury in an attempt to end her own life. In 1931, Munson was committed to St. Lawrence State Hospital for the Insane in Ogdensburg where she remained for 65 years, until her end.Read another story from us: Evelyn Nesbit: world’s first supermodel and the main reason for the “trail of the century”America’s first supermodel had no visitors at the hospital until 1984 when she was found by her half-niece, Darlene Bradley. She died in 1996, at the age of 104.“Long after she and everyone else of this generation shall have become dust, Audrey Munson, who posed for three-fifths of all the statuary of the Panama–Pacific Exposition, will live in the bronzes and canvasses of the art centers of the world.” – New Oxford Item, April 1, 1915

By George PsyllidesTHE European Commission seems ready to give a positive response regarding the future of ailing national carrier Cyprus Airways (CY) if a strategic investor is found and the company completes a restructuring plan, that includes shedding 320 jobs and further cuts in benefits, a government source said yesterday. It followed a two-hour meeting headed by President Nicos Anastasiades which discussed developments, but no official statements were made. The government source said the EU’s competition commission wants the government to complete the restructuring plan and find a strategic investor for the company.Completing the airline’s restructure will see 320 staff, from around 560, being made redundant and cuts in benefits. Two airlines, Ryanair and Aegean Air, have shown interest but there has been nothing concrete yet.The plan, submitted earlier this year, called for further staff reductions and asset sales, and projected 2014 to be a break-even year for the carrier before it returned to profitability in 2015.But it was quickly placed on the back burner after the government realised that a Commission ruling – expected by the end of the year – might force the company to pay back taxpayers’ money, effectively shutting the airline down. The EC is meant to decide whether some €75m in taxpayers’ money given to the airline in recent years constitutes state aid – forbidden by EU competition law – and must be paid back, a decision that would instantly trigger the company’s insolvency.Yesterday’s meeting was attended by members of the airline’s board who recently sent President Anastasiades a letter claiming they had been kept in the dark regarding the negotiations for a strategic investor and that the state was ignoring investors so it could shut the company down. This was rejected by the Presidential Palace. The source said that the board chairman and one member, as well as the company’s legal advisers, participated in the committee that handled negotiations with potential strategic investors.Anastasiades reportedly told the board that no serious government wants to close a company that can survive.During the meeting, CY staff staged a protest outside the presidential palace.“We assembled here to try and prevent the government decision to close Cyprus Airways,” Panayiota Efstathiou said. “Cyprus Airways can survive with the right actions … by appointing the right board and management.”You May LikeLocksmith of HeartsPhil Collins’s Daughter Is Probably The Most Pretty Woman Ever Existed.Locksmith of HeartsUndoEditorChoice.comIf You See Square Waves In The Ocean Get Out Of The Water ImmediatelyEditorChoice.comUndoNovelodgeBaby Photoshoots That Went Hilariously WrongNovelodgeUndo Pensioner dies after crash on Paphos-Polis roadUndoCruise passenger airlifted to Paphos hospitalUndoRemand for pair in alleged property fraud (Updated)Undoby Taboolaby Taboola
